Description

"The Fuji in clear weather" by Katsushika Hokusai

" The Fuji in clear weather" is a print that was made by the greatest master in Japanese prints: Katsushika Hokusai.

Directed for his series of "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji", Hokusai here represents Mount Fuji in a different aspect from other works in the series. We are indeed accustomed to finding the Fuji in a rather calm and soothing setting, with almost dull colors. This print is one of the few to represent the Fuji in its volcanic appearances and that is what gives the richness of the canvas.

First because red is a color that symbolizes power, and here it allows to accentuate the dominant stature of Mount Fuji. And second, because it contrasts Prussia's blue used in the background, which conveys a feeling of calm and well being. The scriptures on the top left are the signature of Hokusai and the title of the print.
