Description
"The Great Wave of Kanagawa" or "The Wave" by Katsushika Hokusai.
An iconic work of Japanese prints by the painter Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. "The Great Wave of Kanagawa", which is part of the series "Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji", is undoubtedly the most recognized Japanese print in Art History. This print can be broken down into three major elements:
The Mount Fuji which, despite its 3776 meters high, seems tiny in front of the colossal wave that is ready to fall. Here it is relayed in the background by Hokusai although it is an iconic icon of Japan. Often described as a pilgrimage site, Mount Fuji is also and above all a deep place of meditation and rest of the mind.
The Wave which composes the major element of the print, dominates the composition with its crouched foam and its impressive size. It can be assimilated to one of those legendary scelerate waves. Powerful sea monster, these waves could reach 30 metres in height and were considered marine folklore until the end of the 19th century.
The vessels which are shiokuri-bune, small, fast boats that were used to transport fish from the Izu and Bōsō peninsulas to the Edo Bay fish markets. In this case, all 3 boats seem trapped in front of the vastness of "The Great Wave of Kanagawa."
We also distinguish from the writings on the left of the canvas. The box can be translated as "36 views of Mount Fuji - Off Kanagawa - Under the Wave". The text placed slightly to the right is the signature of the artist Hokusai Itsu."
AtTENTION: The frame is not supplied with the canvas, so we leave 4 to 5 centimetres of margin on each edge so that we can add a reinforcement.
- Material: This reproduction is a high definition waterproof canvas print made of cotton and polyester. This texture and the thickness of this paper are particularly suitable for the reproduction of prints and thus ensure great fidelity to the original work.
- Artistry: This wave print is part of the ukiyo-e, an artistic movement of the Edo period (1603-1868) that could be translated as a "floating world image."
- Style: Japanese landscape
- Colors: The main colour that is retained from this print is, as for all works of the "Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji", the blue of Prussia.
- Year of realization (originale): 1831
