Description

"The Great Wave of Kanagawa" or "The Wave" by Katsushika Hokusai.

This painting entitled "The Great Wave of Kanagawa" is undoubtedly one of the most popular Japanese works in recent decades. Made in the Edo period in 1831 by the painter Katsushika Hokusai, this work is part of the series "Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji". It is part of the artistic movement of the ukiyo-e, of which Hokusai was a great master.

In analysing the composition of this painting, we quickly distinguish three main elements:

The Mount Fuji, which is a powerful place of meditation and very popular with Buddhist religions. Here he is placed very far away which gives him a feeling of inferiority before the immensity of "The Great Wave of Kanagawa".

The wave is the main object of the wall art. From its height of 10 to 15 meters and its foam in the shape of crouched fingers, the monstrosity of this wave can be put in parallel with the scelerate waves. These sea monsters caused such damage to the ships that the stories of the few survivors of the ships were considered legends until the end of the 19th century.

The boats as well as the people on board for whom the situation seems to be lost in advance in the face of a giant wave that will fall upon them. However, it is noted that this is shiokuri-bune, small, fast boats that were intended to deliver fish to the markets of Edo Bay.

The Japanese text on the top left of the canvas is the signature of the author Hokusai Itsu", and the name of the wall art, in box, "36 views of Mount Fuji - Off Kanagawa - Under the Wave."

AtTENTION: The frame is not supplied with the canvas, so we leave 4 to 5 centimetres of margin on each edge in order to add a frame or reinforcement.
